Amanda Gisonni, Nadia Kemp lead John Jay to win

WICCOPEE — Nadia Kemp began the party. It was only fitting that she end it, too.

The junior second baseman cranked a pair of solo home runs to right-center field in the first two innings, and singled in the final run to invoke the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning, in the John Jay High School softball team’s 16-1 romp over Yorktown on Wednesday.

Kemp, the undefeated Patriots’ leadoff hitter, launched the first of her line-drive blasts just three pitches into the bottom of the first inning.

“I think we just came out really aggressive,” Kemp said. “Leading off the game with a home run really sets the pace for the rest of the game.”

After scoring six runs in the first two innings, the Patriots posted five more in the third on a rally that began with back-to-back-to-back triples by Vicky Lattanzio, Megan Theiller and Amber Velasquez.

Theiller, whose triple hit a fence deep in left field, later highlighted a five-run fifth with a towering solo home run to center.

On the hill, Amanda Gisonni (6-0) matched the offensive outburst, allowing one hit — a triple to lead off the second — in five innings, striking out six without issuing a walk.

“Their bats are incredible. They’re phenomenal,” the senior said of her teammates. “Even in the field, backing me up, I just know they’re there, which is great. It eases a lot of pressure.”

In all, nine different Patriots drove in at least one run, including Gisonni.

John Jay (11-0), the defending Class AA state champion, visits Hendrick Hudson Monday
